Lots of fun was had at our first Disco/Karaoke AR Party! Students earned attending the party by meeting their personal AR goal for the quarter. This week students are taking the STAR test again, so they should know their new quarter goal for the next AR party next week. The next AR Party will be MINUTE TO WIN IT! Start working on those points today. The library is opened everyday before school from 7:40-7:55 am and after school from 2:15-2:30pm for AR testing and check in and out. This is run by our entire staff, so if you need to speak to Ms. Juliano, please always feel free to email me at [email protected].
Book Fair is Coming Next week...Stay Tuned! This week students begin learning the Engineering Design Process at their grade specific level. Below you will see specific grade level themes and units:
PreK-Me & the Library-Stories and STEM-Fairy Tales Kindergarten: Manners in the Library & Stories and STEM-Fairy Tales First Grade: Checking Out/AR & Stories and STEM-Fairy Tales Second Grade: The Engineering Design Process-Collaboration Third Grade:The Engineering Design Process-Collaboration Fourth Grade:The Engineering Design Process-Variables Fifth Grade: The Engineering Design Process-Chemical Reactions-Introduction to Chemistry Our first STEM focus for all grade levels will be the "T" in STEM....TECHNOLOGY. Students will receive an orientation and practice with the technology that will help them to be successful with grade level expectations. The primary grades will work on keyboarding, mouse practice, logging in and general computer use and terms, where intermediate will learn the basics, as well as how to access Google Classroom. We are thrilled to reimagine our traditional library space by opening this fall with our new Nate Mack STEM Library Learning Commons. Typically, libraries have served as both an archive of recorded knowledge, as well as a locus of knowledge. Information is no longer confined to printed materials, available only in a physical location. We are reinventing ourselves as a 21st Century community hub of learning. In the past, the library was "like a store, a place to 'get stuff'." We have expanded this space to also be a place like a kitchen, where we "make stuff." Our goal is to help our community access and consume information, both physically and digitally, for their futures. We will also be a place for our community to collaborate, construct, and apply the information they are consuming. "Printed books still play a critical role in supporting learners, but digital technologies offer additional pathways to learning and content acquisition. Students, parents, and teachers no longer need a library simply for access. Instead, they require a place that encourages participatory learning and allows for co-construction of understanding from a variety of sources. In other words, instead of being an archive, libraries are becoming learning commons" (excerpt from article 21st Century Libraries: the Learning Commons, by Beth Holland, Johns Hopkins University). Our goal is for the STEM Library Learning Commons to be a hub of learning for our entire community: students, parents, and teachers. We will come together in groups to collaborate, barrier-free, and learn about innovations we are passionate about. "We want to interact with the content, the technology, the space, and each other to gain context and increase our knowledge" (Holland). As you walk in this school year, you will see many changes to our space, physically and philosophically. With the addition of a green screen center, epic Lego space, magnetic pipeline (coming soon), and maker-spaces, students, parents, and teachers will have places to make, read, play, design, code, film movies, engineer, and learn collaboratively, as a community. After-school events and clubs will be offered for a variety of age groups. From Book Beasts to our Maker-space Series, from Stop Animation/Green Screen to our State Championship Robotics Team, there will be something for everyone... and be sure to stay tuned for our Accelerated Reader (AR) Launch this year, as well! We welcome you to visit our new STEM Library Learning Commons, and to be an active part of this culture of learning together! Ms. Juliano |
